Ubisoft is trying out a new kind of video game where players control their teammates using voice commands.
The company has created a prototype, called “Teammates,” which features artificial intelligence characters that understand natural speech and can see what is happening in the game world.
This experimental project is currently in a closed playtest. A few hundred players are already trying it out. The game is a first-person shooter set in a dystopian future, where your goal is to lead a squad through an enemy base to find five missing resistance members.
Players interact with three AI characters. One is an assistant named Jaspar, who knows the game’s story and can change settings. The other two, Pablo and Sofia, are robots in the game world that follow voice commands. They do not just understand words, they also understand visual context. For example, if you tell Sofia to hide behind a barrel, she will find one based on where you are looking.

According to Ubisoft’s Data and AI Director, Rémi Labory, this tech allows for a unique, personalized experience. He stated that player choices directly influence how the characters react, something that is difficult to do with standard game design. The project guides players from a tutorial to a mission conclusion all within this AI-driven framework.
In early footage, the AI teammates appeared quite talkative. Ubisoft is aware of this and is testing different personality settings for the robots. Players might even select from options with unusual names like “Bad Cat and Good Boy” to change how Pablo and Sofia behave and speak.
This is not Ubisoft’s first step into using AI. Last year, the company introduced a tool called Ghostwriter to help draft game dialogue. It also recently released a game, Anno 117: Pax Romana, that included AI-generated artwork on its loading screens.
While Teammates is just a research project for now, the technology behind it could eventually be used in future Ubisoft games. The company has built the system to work with its own Snowdrop and Anvil game engines, making it easier for other development teams within Ubisoft to adopt this voice-controlled AI in the future.
