NothingOS update removes lock screen ads and Meta bloatware

To address user backlash, smartphone maker Nothing is rolling out a software update that removes two of its most criticized features: intrusive lock screen ads and pre-installed bloatware.

The new software update addresses complaints that erupted late last year after users discovered their devices, known for a clean software approach, came with unwanted software.

The first major change is the removal of “Lock Glimpse.” This feature, which displayed promotional content and notifications on the lock screen, will be completely taken away from all Nothing Phone a Series devices, except for the Phone (a) Lite. The company stated the decision was “based on feedback” and that the feature will only return “once it’s meaningfully improved to feel less intrusive.”

The second, and perhaps most welcomed, fix tackles bloatware. Owners of the Nothing Phone 3a lite can now fully uninstall three Meta apps: Meta App Installer, Meta App Manager, and Meta Services. Previously, users could only disable them.

To remove the apps, users must go to the app’s settings page, tap “Disable,” and then restart their device. Nothing confirms that after the reboot, “all Meta services are removed from the system partition.” The company notes that a factory reset will bring these apps back.

The move comes after Nothing faced significant criticism for its OS 4.0 update, which seemed to contradict the company’s earlier promise of a bloatware-free experience. Users had pointed to an old company tweet that stated, “Nothing OS takes out the bloatware.”

Nothing had previously explained that pre-installing “partner apps and services” helped offset manufacturing costs, a common industry practice. However, user pressure has now pushed the company to provide a true removal option.

Nothing says it is working to bring the same bloatware removal capability to more phones in a future update.
