To keep hard disk drives competitive in the age of flash storage, Western Digital revealed two new families of hard drives. One aims to double, and eventually multiply, performance, while the other cuts power use significantly for large-scale data storage.
The announcement targets data centers, where massive amounts of “cold” or infrequently accessed data still reside on hard drives because they offer far lower cost per terabyte than solid-state drives.
The first new line, called High-Bandwidth HDDs, focuses on raw speed. Western Digital is developing two types. The first, already being tested by clients, uses multiple heads to read and write data at the same time. This “dual-actuator” design doubles the bandwidth of a traditional hard drive.

The second, more advanced type is called Dual-Pivot. It places two completely independent mechanical arms inside a single standard 3.5-inch drive. Each arm operates its own set of heads simultaneously, enabling two independent tasks at once. This can double the sequential input/output performance. These Dual-Pivot drives are currently in the lab and are slated for availability in 2028.

Looking further ahead, Western Digital plans to combine both technologies in future drives. The company projects this could lead to an eightfold increase in bandwidth and a fourfold increase in I/O performance compared to today’s hard drives.
For applications where energy efficiency is more critical than top speed, Western Digital is developing Power-Optimized HDDs. These drives are designed for what the company calls the “active cold” storage tier. This refers to vast pools of data, like AI training datasets or system logs, that need to remain readily accessible but are too expensive to store on high-performance SSDs or high-capacity hard drives.
These power-optimized 3.5-inch drives use a “minimal random I/O” approach to reduce power consumption by 20% compared to conventional hard drives. This cut in energy use lowers operating costs for large-scale storage. The first of these energy-saving drives is expected to enter customer qualification in 2027.
