Students are using smart AI glasses to cheat on tests

AI-smart-glasses-cheating

Students have always found ways to cheat. From looking at a seatmate’s paper to writing notes on their hands, the tricks have been around for decades. But now, technology is making cheating much easier.

AI-powered smart glasses are becoming a popular tool for students who want to get better scores. This is especially true in parts of Asia where exams can decide a person’s future. A single test can determine if someone gets into a good university or lands a job.

In South Korea, two people were caught using smart glasses during an English test last month. Companies often use this test when hiring new workers. Around the same time, in Taiwan, a student trying to get into medical school was also caught wearing smart glasses. The proctors noticed the student looking at the test in a strange way. When they checked, they found the glasses were giving off heat.

This kind of cheating is not brand new. But as these glasses become cheaper and more advanced, the problem is getting bigger. Schools and testing centers are feeling the pressure to change how they run exams.

Some countries are already taking action. In China, officials checked every pair of glasses during the college entrance exam last month. Over 10 million students took that test. In the UK, the head of the exam watchdog recently warned that AI glasses and other smart devices could make cheating a serious issue.

Experts say there are likely many more cases that have not been caught. A researcher from Deakin University in Australia pointed out that reported cases are probably just the tip of the iceberg.

The technology is getting harder to spot. Smart glasses are becoming thinner and more stylish. They can connect to AI models and show answers right on the lenses, which makes them difficult for proctors to detect. Meta launched its first smart glasses with Ray-Ban in late 2023 and has sold over seven million pairs since then.
