Beats Pill portable speaker with 24-hour battery life, USB-C connectivity announced

Beats discontinued its last Bluetooth speaker, the Pill+, back in 2022. Before this decision, Beats had enjoyed success with a range of smaller, portable speakers, including the original Pill and Pill XL models. 9 years after the last release, Beats has reintroduced its new Pill portable speaker, showcasing a completely redesigned and re-engineered version. The most noticeable change in the new Beats Pill is its 20-degree upward tilt, which the company claims enhances sound projection. Beats promises “more powerful, room-filling sound, bigger bass, and improved tonality” thanks to an updated woofer and tweeter combination designed to reduce distortion. Additionally, the new Pill is 10 percent lighter than the Pill+ and features a removable lanyard for easier portability. The speaker is also IP67 rated for dust and water resistance, making it durable enough to survive brief submersion in water. Similar to previous models, users can sync two Beats Pill speakers for stereo audio.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra: SD 8 Gen 3, 120Hz AMOLED, 1-inch sensor, Titanium Edition

Xiaomi-14-Ultra

Xiaomi has introduced in China its best smartphone to date, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, just a few days before its global debut at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona this February 25.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra looks similar to its predecessor in terms of the layout. But this time, it’s more refined, and Xiaomi is joining in on the Titanium hype as it will come with a Titanium Special Edition model, which uses a grade 5 titanium like the new iPhone 15 Pro series. Oddly, it weighs 229.6g, which is heavier than the black and white (22.4.4g) and Dragon Crystal (229.5g) colors. The Titanium will also exclusively get two-way satellite communication.

Another similar but refined feature is the cameras. It still has four 50-megapixel shooters, however, the main one gets an upgraded 1-inch Sony LYT-900 sensor. It also has a wider f/1.63 aperture, which can be dropped to f/4.0.

The other three cameras use the same 1/2.5-inch Sony IMX858 sensor. That’s for the ultra-wide lens with a 12mm equivalent, the 3.2x 75mm portrait lens, and the 5x periscope glass with a 120mm equivalent. Xiaomi boasts that the periscope camera captures 196% more light than the iPhone 15 Pro Max. You can also use the zoom lenses for macros as they have an impressive minimum focusing distance of 10cm (75mm) and 30cm (120mm).

Xiaomi has also kept the same 6.73-inch LTPO AMOLED display from last year. It still has a high 120Hz refresh rate and Dolby Vision, only this time, it gets brighter at 3000 nits. The screen is protected by the brand’s own Shield Glass which apparently has 10x higher drop resistance and is also much cleaner.

As expected, the brand-new Xiaomi flagship is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, which you can pair with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. It will then ship with the all-new Xiaomi HyperOS based on Android 14.

What we really like is the upgraded battery as it’s now at 5,300mAh. Wired charging is at 90W, which is odd since other Xiaomi phones already breached the 100W mark. But, it makes up for it by having a whopping 80W wireless charging with its own wireless chip. It even comes with Xiaomi’s dedicated G1 and P2 surge chips to regulate charging.

Since it’s an overblown camera phone, Xiaomi has created a special Photography Kit for the 14 Ultra that includes a case with a camera grip with a 1,500mAh battery inside, a strap and rings for the large lens.

In China, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra in Black, Blue, and White has a price of CNY6,499 (~Php50,400) for the 12GB/256GB, CNY6,999 (~Php54,300) for the 16GB/512GB, and CNY7,799 (~Php60,500) for the 16GB/1TB. The Titanium Edition comes in at CNY8,799 (~Php68,300). We’ll update this article with the global prices, especially the Philippine availability, once they are out.
