PH to phaseout legacy 2G and 3G networks

The Philippine government is preparing to officially retire its outdated 2G and 3G mobile networks. The goal is to free up valuable radio frequencies so they can be used by faster, modern 4G and especially 5G services. But before this could happen, this transition requires the passage of a new law, the Konektadong Pinoy Act, according to Henry Aguda, Information Secretary for the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT). Aguda explained that because only about 1 in 7 Filipinos (roughly 15%) still uses basic 2G or 3G phones, it makes sense to shut these networks down. Retiring these old networks also helps unlock more of this valuable network spectrum for new internet players entering the Philippine market. ASUS has introduced a cheaper variant of the ROG Zephyrus G14.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 was first introduced in January with a powerful AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 graphics. Now, the company wants to appeal to more markets with a new variant that’s powered by an AMD Ryzen 9 270 Hawk Point CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 processor.

Everything else appears to be the same. It still has a compact 14-inch OLED screen with a 2880 x 1800 pixel resolution, a high 120Hz refresh rate, and is even PANTONE Validated and has G-Sync support.

You can pair it with up to 32GB of LPDDR5X 7500 RAM and 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. The battery has a large 73WHrs capacity with 200W AC charging. Port selection includes HDMI 2.1 FRL, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, and one USB-C 3.2 Gen 2.

The RTX 5060-powered ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 has a starting price of just USD1,799 (~Php100,100). Release details in the Philippines are yet to be known.
