Research shows old smartphones can be turned into tiny data centers

How many smartphones have you used in the past decade, and how many are now either in the trash or accumulating dust in a box somewhere? Now, imagine billions of these old smartphones turned into electronic waste (e-waste) — that’s a lot. Over 1.2 billion smartphones are produced worldwide every year, which is not only energy-intensive but also uses a lot of natural resources. Not to mention the logistics it requires, which contributes to the carbon dioxide emissions in our atmosphere. Unfortunately, smartphones are not as durable as they used to be, and even the phones in still-functional conditions are likely to be replaced after a couple of years, so most are unlikely to be recycled and will still end up in the dump. A recent research study from the University of Tartu’s Institute of Computer Science in Estonia, published in IEEE Xplore , showed a new approach to reducing e-waste created by outdated smartphones and ensuring sustainable data processing by turning your old smartph...

Apart from the GT 7, realme also introduced a cheaper alternative, the realme GT 7T, inheriting a couple of the same impressive specs at a much lower price tag.

Like the GT 7, the realme GT 7T also boasts an enormous 7,000mAh battery. Per realme, it can last up to 3 days of light usage, 20.66 hours of YouTube streaming, or 8.9 hours of playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.

It’s been aptly paired with 120W SUPERVOOC charging, with a 50% charge only taking 15 minutes and a full one in just 40 minutes. Smart ByPass charging sends power directly to the motherboard so you can game while charging without overheating.

The duo also shares realme’s new IceSense Graphene Design that uses a large 7700mm² Cooling System and goes further with the Thermal Conductivity Graphene built on the outer rear panel for better heat dissipation.

Its extra cooling system is the reason why the colorways are called IceSense Blue and IceSense Black. The surface also feels physically cool and refreshing in the summer and warm and gentle in the winter.

Both models also share an impressive 50-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide, and a 32-megapixel glass for selfies. 4K selfie video, 8K rear video, and AI photography features like AI Travel Snap Camera are also here.

To keep the price down, the GT 7T went with a still-powerful MediaTek Dimensity 8400 Max processor, paired with a generous 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Early tests show it scores over 1.7 million in AnTuTu Benchmark.

For a more optimized performance, the device sports realme’s GT Boost algorithm for gaming and SignalCatcher for better wireless signal. 360-degree NFC is also here for improved cashless payments.

The realme GT 7T has an SRP of Php29,999 in the Philippines, while the GT 7 comes in at Php37,999. You can get it at Shopee from May 27 to June 2 for as low as Php25,499 and with a free realme Watch S2 and 500 MLBB Diamonds.

It’s available for only Php25,999 in TikTok Shop from June 3 to 10.
