Google is testing a new option that lets people choose a different Gmail address for their existing account. This solves a common problem for users who have wanted to update their email identity for years without losing their data.
The change was first noted this week on Google’s help pages. The updated instructions currently appear only in the Hindi language section. This indicates the initial test phase is likely happening in India, with a worldwide release to follow.
Previously, someone wanting a new @gmail.com address had to create a separate account. They would then need to move all their information over manually, which was a difficult process that often-disrupted linked apps.

Now, users can select a fresh Gmail address while keeping everything in their account. This includes all past emails, saved photos, and connected services. The original email address will not disappear but will function as a backup.
Messages sent to the old address will continue to arrive in the same Gmail inbox. The old address will also remain valid for signing into Google products like YouTube, Drive, and Maps.
Google’s support page notes the feature is being released slowly to all users. There are two key rules: after a change, you must wait twelve months before you can choose another new address, and you cannot delete your newly selected one.
