Apple has selected Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence as the engine for its next wave of smart features, including a long-awaited overhaul of the Siri voice assistant.
Under the agreement, the upcoming “Apple Foundation Models” will be developed using Gemini’s advanced AI and Google’s cloud services. These systems will form the backbone of Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of AI tools. The first major result will be a significantly upgraded Siri, designed to be more intuitive and personalized, slated for release later this year.
The Cupertino company assured users that Apple’s signature focus on privacy would remain, with all AI processing happening either directly on devices or through Apple’s secure Private Cloud Compute servers.

The deal concludes extensive behind-the-scenes negotiations. Apple initially previewed an AI-driven Siri at its June 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference but later announced a delay in March 2025. While exploring options, Apple held discussions with other AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic, and even integrated limited ChatGPT access for users.
However, by late 2025, industry reports indicated Google had become the frontrunner, with talks of a specialized version of Gemini and an annual licensing fee believed to be in the range of $1 billion.
This strategic move pairs Apple’s hardware and software ecosystem with Google’s cutting-edge AI research, aiming to finally bring a truly competitive and capable assistant to iPhone users worldwide.
