CES 2026 has a new, surprising exhibitor: popular toy maker Lego. During the consumer tech show, the company announced the Lego Smart Play System, and it’s easily one of the biggest innovations ever made to one of the most classic and prominent toys in the world.
During its CES 2026 presence, the company demoed the Lego Smart Play System with a prototype 2×4 Smart Brick, Smart Tag tiles, and Smart Minifigures.
The special Bricks and Minifigures can detect nearby Tags, which are 2×2 studless tiles that have unique digital IDs that command the bricks and minifigures.
This combination will easily bring Lego models to life. For example, when in contact with a Smart Tag, Smart Bricks can light up and make sounds.

Lego demoed it working on helicopters making helicopter sounds, Lightsabers lighting up and making swoosh sounds in Star Wars models, and more.
The bricks also have accelerometer sensors, so the lights and sounds accurately respond to how you play with the models.

For this to work, the Smart Bricks are powered by a dedicated ASIC chip, with near-field magnetic positioning, a small speaker, an LED array, and the said accelerometer sensor.
Lego also created BrickNet, a Bluetooth-based protocol that allows multiple bricks to talk to each other and work in sync. Lego assured that BrickNet is protected by privacy controls and enhanced encryption.

The company also assured parents that the system doesn’t require setup, so no screen is involved.
All these smart Legos are charged wirelessly using a charging pad that can accommodate multiple bricks at once.
The Lego Smart Play System will be first available in two sets. There are the Star Wars sets that will be available for pre-order on Friday and will launch in March 1. The “Luke’s Red Five X-Wing” set will retail for USD69.99 (~Php4,100) while the “Throne Room Duel and A-Wing” set comes in at USD159.99 (~Php9,500).
