Future iOS update may restrict financed or leased devices after missed payments — report

iOS-update-restrict-leased-devices-missed-payments

Code discovered in the iOS 27 beta suggests that Apple is developing a system that could restrict leased or financed devices if users miss their monthly payments.

This aligns with an earlier report claiming that Apple may soon launch an Apple Upgrade leasing program in the United States, giving customers a more affordable way to get the latest Apple hardware through lower monthly payments.

The report came from Bloomberg, which said that Apple will partner with Klarna, a Swedish fintech company, to power the financing service. The program is expected to cover the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac.

According to the report, iPhone and Apple Watch leases may last up to 24 months, while Mac and iPad leases could extend up to 36 months.

Similar to car leases in the United States, customers can either keep the device by paying off the remaining balance or return it at the end of the lease. They may also have the option to upgrade to a newer model before the lease term ends.

As for the new iOS feature, code found in the iOS 27 beta indicates that financed iPhones could automatically restrict access to apps and certain services when payments become overdue.

The system is reportedly called App Managed Features, allowing authorized financing companies or service providers to enroll an iPhone and perform status checks. If the system determines that the financing agreement is no longer in good standing, it can place the device into Restricted Mode, blocking access to most apps until the outstanding payments are settled.

However, essential apps and services needed for communication and safety will remain accessible, including Messages, Home, and other critical system apps.

The current version of the code does not specify a fixed number of missed payments required to trigger the restriction. Instead, enforcement appears to be determined by the financing provider based on its own policies.

Additionally, the feature introduces a new activation lock called Partner Finance Lock, which is designed to prevent users from reselling the device or stripping it for parts while it remains under a financing agreement.

Although the feature is integrated with Find My, the financing partner reportedly does not gain access to the device’s location.

Amazon announces two new Tomb Raider games

Get ready to dust off your climbing axes. Lara Croft, the legendary treasure hunter, is returning to consoles and computers in a big way. Following a long break from solo adventures, two major new games in the Tomb Raider series were revealed at The Game Awards 2025. The last time players controlled Lara in a core series game was 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Now, publisher Amazon Games and longtime developer Crystal Dynamics are bringing her back with a pair of distinct projects. The first is Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis , a full remake of the original 1996 game that started it all. It is being built with Unreal Engine 5 by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog. Fans can expect a visual overhaul for Lara’s first journey, which the announcement suggests will still include prehistoric creatures. This remake is planned for launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Following that will be Tomb Raider: Catalyst , an entirely new story set for release in 2027....

Sei Crypto Wallet to come pre-installed on Xiaomi phones

Xiaomi and The Sei Development Foundation, a non-profit that promotes the Sei network, have entered a global partnership that aims to promote mainstream blockchain adoption. From 2026, Xiaomi phones available outside mainland China and the United States will come pre-installed with a wallet and crypto discovery app developed by Sei Labs. This would definitely help increase the adoption of the network as Xiaomi is one of the biggest smartphone vendors in the world, just behind Samsung and Apple. Participating phones will be able to conduct peer-to-peer payments, explore Web3 products, and access decentralized applications without the need to download third-party apps. What’s more, Sei plans to implement stablecoin payments in over 20,000 Xiaomi stores, starting in Hong Kong and the European Union. Sei Labs aims to “build a decentralized NASDAQ” and targets to accommodate 200,000 transactions per second as it aims to shift the financial ecosystem on-chain. To make it possible, th...
