LTO warns: Vehicles with unauthorized plates face penalties starting September 1

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) announced that it will start penalizing motor vehicles that use unauthorized plates starting September 1, 2026. This is after the recent widespread online sale of improvised license plates, where LTO-issued plate replicas are sold. LTO Chairperson Markus Lacanilao said that motor vehicles that use an improvised plate without authorization will be impounded. Meanwhile, those who have authorization but purchase LTO-issued replicas sold online will have the said replica plates confiscated. He said that motorists who lost their license plates must apply for an affidavit of loss so they can get an authorization to use an improvised plate. The temporary plates must have the words “improvised plate” or “lost plate” written on them, instead of copying the legitimate plate issued by the LTO. Lacanilao added that they will go after the sellers of said unauthorized plates and have already coordinated with the Phi...

Mobile cybersecurity attacks in PH rise by 28% — report

Cybersecurity-75982

Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has recorded a 28% jump in mobile attacks targeting Filipino consumers over the past year, as smartphones become the go-to device for banking, shopping, and daily communication across the region.

During the first quarter of 2026, the company said it stopped nearly 30,000 mobile threats aimed at Asia-Pacific users. The Philippines was among several markets with notable increases, though other countries saw even bigger spikes. Taiwan led with a 373% rise, followed by Sri Lanka (132%), Thailand (127%), Bangladesh (108%), and China (69%).

Kaspersky also reported 18,187 threats in India and 15,163 in Indonesia, though these numbers appear to exceed the regional total it provided, with no clear explanation given for the mismatch.

Cybersecurity

The data was shared at Kaspersky’s Cyber Security Weekend event in Guangzhou, China. A separate consumer survey by the firm found that people in Asia-Pacific are more digitally active than the global norm. About 80% of regional respondents buy items online, compared to 71% worldwide, while 72% use digital finance tools, just above the global figure of 70%.

Worry about online crime is also slightly higher in the region, with 35% expressing concern versus 32% globally. Thailand had the highest anxiety level at 39%, followed by Malaysia at 38%, Indonesia at 35%, China at 34%, India at 32%, and Vietnam at 31%.

Instead of leaving protection entirely up to users, Kaspersky encouraged banks and digital service providers to build security features directly into their apps.

Amazon announces two new Tomb Raider games

Get ready to dust off your climbing axes. Lara Croft, the legendary treasure hunter, is returning to consoles and computers in a big way. Following a long break from solo adventures, two major new games in the Tomb Raider series were revealed at The Game Awards 2025. The last time players controlled Lara in a core series game was 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Now, publisher Amazon Games and longtime developer Crystal Dynamics are bringing her back with a pair of distinct projects. The first is Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis , a full remake of the original 1996 game that started it all. It is being built with Unreal Engine 5 by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog. Fans can expect a visual overhaul for Lara’s first journey, which the announcement suggests will still include prehistoric creatures. This remake is planned for launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Following that will be Tomb Raider: Catalyst , an entirely new story set for release in 2027....

Sei Crypto Wallet to come pre-installed on Xiaomi phones

Xiaomi and The Sei Development Foundation, a non-profit that promotes the Sei network, have entered a global partnership that aims to promote mainstream blockchain adoption. From 2026, Xiaomi phones available outside mainland China and the United States will come pre-installed with a wallet and crypto discovery app developed by Sei Labs. This would definitely help increase the adoption of the network as Xiaomi is one of the biggest smartphone vendors in the world, just behind Samsung and Apple. Participating phones will be able to conduct peer-to-peer payments, explore Web3 products, and access decentralized applications without the need to download third-party apps. What’s more, Sei plans to implement stablecoin payments in over 20,000 Xiaomi stores, starting in Hong Kong and the European Union. Sei Labs aims to “build a decentralized NASDAQ” and targets to accommodate 200,000 transactions per second as it aims to shift the financial ecosystem on-chain. To make it possible, th...
