10 minutes of AI use weakens focus on hard tasks — research

Spending as little as 10 minutes with an AI tool may chip away at a person’s willingness to grind through tough work, according to a newly published study. A team of researchers carried out several experiments and found that people lost focus and gave up more easily on demanding tasks soon after turning to artificial intelligence for help. The team calls the result a striking one. They say it matches what plenty of people already suspect: leaning on AI slowly wears down our mental sharpness. When answers arrive within seconds, working things out on your own starts to feel painfully slow. That robs people of what the researchers call productive struggle, the kind of effort that actually helps us improve. Scam attempts hit 84% of Filipino adults, losses reach Php121.8 billion Artificial Intelligence designs viruses that kill bacteria more effectively Brian Christian of the University of California, Berkeley, who took part in the work, put it this way.

Artificial-intelligence-use

Brian Christian of the University of California, Berkeley, who took part in the work, put it this way. These systems were designed to be helpful, he said, but are they helping us in a way that genuinely does us good? Ironically, he added, the study shows they often help us in ways that do not.

For the first experiment, 354 people were divided into two groups and handed 15 simple fraction questions. One group worked alone. The other could turn to ChatGPT. Once 12 questions were done, the researchers pulled the chatbot from the second group. That group had been getting more answers right up to that point. The moment the AI vanished, the pattern flipped. They quickly began missing questions.

Next, 667 more volunteers went through a similar setup. The same thing happened. People who had leaned on AI either slipped up or quit altogether once the tool was gone.

A third round involved 201 participants who tackled a reading comprehension question taken from the SAT, the test used for college admissions in the United States. Same story again. Losing access to AI left them unwilling to keep trying, and their answers suffered.

Amazon announces two new Tomb Raider games

Get ready to dust off your climbing axes. Lara Croft, the legendary treasure hunter, is returning to consoles and computers in a big way. Following a long break from solo adventures, two major new games in the Tomb Raider series were revealed at The Game Awards 2025. The last time players controlled Lara in a core series game was 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Now, publisher Amazon Games and longtime developer Crystal Dynamics are bringing her back with a pair of distinct projects. The first is Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis , a full remake of the original 1996 game that started it all. It is being built with Unreal Engine 5 by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog. Fans can expect a visual overhaul for Lara’s first journey, which the announcement suggests will still include prehistoric creatures. This remake is planned for launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Following that will be Tomb Raider: Catalyst , an entirely new story set for release in 2027....

Sei Crypto Wallet to come pre-installed on Xiaomi phones

Xiaomi and The Sei Development Foundation, a non-profit that promotes the Sei network, have entered a global partnership that aims to promote mainstream blockchain adoption. From 2026, Xiaomi phones available outside mainland China and the United States will come pre-installed with a wallet and crypto discovery app developed by Sei Labs. This would definitely help increase the adoption of the network as Xiaomi is one of the biggest smartphone vendors in the world, just behind Samsung and Apple. Participating phones will be able to conduct peer-to-peer payments, explore Web3 products, and access decentralized applications without the need to download third-party apps. What’s more, Sei plans to implement stablecoin payments in over 20,000 Xiaomi stores, starting in Hong Kong and the European Union. Sei Labs aims to “build a decentralized NASDAQ” and targets to accommodate 200,000 transactions per second as it aims to shift the financial ecosystem on-chain. To make it possible, th...
