Chinese consumer electronics giant Huawei will now use its native operating system, HarmonyOS, on all its new devices, including smartphones, tablets, and wearables, dropping Android support on its previous devices this year.
Initially mentioned during the launch of the Mate 70 family, the Mate X6 foldable, and the MatePad Pro tablet in November 2024, the said devices were the first Huawei gadgets to ship using the operating system. Now that it’s 2025, all upcoming devices will roll out with a built-in HarmonyOS Next.
In the early development of Huawei phones and tablets, they used Android as their operating system. However, things got sour after US sanctions. They have since pivoted and developed a more self-reliant OS, giving rise to the development of HarmonyOS.
However, analysts believe that moving to a more independent ecosystem will face serious compatibility and app restrictions challenges. The software also has limited app development, which may prevent some users from buying Huawei devices.
