OLED panels are great. They offer possibly the best color quality and contrast. However, they are infamous for burn-in issues.
This is why most people want to settle for LCD TVs. While the image quality is not as good, a rich history of consumer feedback proves they last longer and are more reliable.
However, this extensive test from the website Rtings.com may be debunking what we thought we know.
They used 102 TVs, playing a news channel that constantly shows a ticker bar at the bottom to test burn-in. They ran the test for 3 years at maximum brightness.
The test confirms that burn-in is indeed an issue with OLED TVs. However, it also reveals that LCDs struggle with major issues after 18,000 hours of being used.
20 of the 102 TVs are completely dead after 3 years while 21 TVs are barely usable.
Majority of the test TVs that had issues are those with LED backlight with no local dimming. Around 60% of these units encountered defects, with many suffering burned out LEDs.
The test also confirms that burn-in is not an issue when watching dynamic content. However, static content like news tickers or task bars in computers, will be a big problems on OLEDs.
What’ more, the test shows that OLED TVs have a longer lifespan than all TV types and are less likely to develop problems.
Most TVs tested easily survived 10,000 hours of being used. That’s a lifespan of more than 3 years if used 8 hours everyday.
What’s more interesting is, the test reveals that more expensive doesn’t translate to durability. The cheaper models outlasted premium ones.
The test also showed that LG and TCL had the lowest failure test. Albeit the test subjects are quite limited, so take it with a grain of salt.
