Roblox announced that all players worldwide must verify their age if they want to use the platform’s in-game chat feature. The move comes after growing pressure from regulators and lawsuits filed by states, including Louisiana and Texas, over child safety concerns.
Previously, age verification was optional. Now, to access chat, users must prove their age. Players aged 13 and older can choose to verify with a government-issued ID. For all other players, the primary method will be facial age estimation. This requires users to take a live selfie, which is analyzed by Roblox’s third-party partner, Persona. The company states these images are deleted immediately after processing.
This system was tested late last year in New Zealand, Australia, and the Netherlands. Roblox reports that half of its daily active users in those regions have already completed the verification.

It’s important to note that age verification is only required for chat, not for playing games. Once verified, players are sorted into one of six age groups, ranging from under 9 to 21 and over. The new rules restrict chat communication primarily to a user’s own age group and the groups directly above and below it.
There are two exceptions. First, players aged 13 and up can use a “Trusted Connections” feature to chat more freely with friends added via their phone contacts or by sharing QR codes outside of Roblox, though both users still need to be age-verified. Second, for the youngest players under 9, chat will be turned off entirely unless a parent enables it after completing age verification.
Roblox says it may prompt users to verify their age again if their in-game behavior suggests they misrepresented their age.
This is the latest in a series of safety updates from the company. In 2024, Roblox banned users under 13 from certain content and restricted their direct messaging. Last year, it increased moderation of user-created games, known as “experiences,” following a lawsuit from Louisiana that alleged minors were exposed to disturbing content.
The new global chat rule marks Roblox’s most direct step yet to segment its user base by age and respond to calls for a safer environment for its younger players.
