Scam attempts hit 84% of Filipino adults, losses reach Php121.8 billion

Scam

A new report released says 84 percent of Filipino adults ran into a scam attempt in the past year. That is higher than the 77 percent recorded in 2025.

The State of Scams Philippines 2026 Report came from the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA), Mastercard, and Gogolook. It surveyed 1,160 Filipino adults.

Yearly scam losses were estimated at Php121.8 billion, based on survey replies, not confirmed cases. Each victim lost about Php10,427 on average. The typical adult met 151 scams in a year.

Scammers leaned more on digital wallets, which rose from 34 percent in 2025 to 73 percent in 2026. Bank transfers dropped from 36 percent to 12 percent. The Philippines was the only Southeast Asian nation to see that decline.

Scammers

Instant messaging brought 39 percent of scams, while social media brought 36 percent. Platforms with direct messaging accounted for 88 percent of all attempts.

About 58 percent of adults felt sure they could catch a scam, yet 60 percent of those who met one still engaged with it.

Mental health suffered for 82 percent of victims. About 22 percent could not cover basic needs. One in five parents said their child was scammed.

Scam

Only 4 percent told authorities. Among those who lost money, 29 percent reported it.

GASA Asia Pacific director Brian Hanley said each statistic represents a real person who trusted the wrong message or link.

The report pushed for a national coordinating body to share intelligence and speed up responses, pointing to the National Anti-Scam Hub.

Mastercard Philippines country manager Jason Crasto said no single group can fix this alone and stressed public and private cooperation.

Gogolook Philippines head Mel Migriño said its Whoscall platform helps users spot unfamiliar callers and suspicious messages.

Amazon announces two new Tomb Raider games

Get ready to dust off your climbing axes. Lara Croft, the legendary treasure hunter, is returning to consoles and computers in a big way. Following a long break from solo adventures, two major new games in the Tomb Raider series were revealed at The Game Awards 2025. The last time players controlled Lara in a core series game was 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Now, publisher Amazon Games and longtime developer Crystal Dynamics are bringing her back with a pair of distinct projects. The first is Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis , a full remake of the original 1996 game that started it all. It is being built with Unreal Engine 5 by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog. Fans can expect a visual overhaul for Lara’s first journey, which the announcement suggests will still include prehistoric creatures. This remake is planned for launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Following that will be Tomb Raider: Catalyst , an entirely new story set for release in 2027....

Sei Crypto Wallet to come pre-installed on Xiaomi phones

Xiaomi and The Sei Development Foundation, a non-profit that promotes the Sei network, have entered a global partnership that aims to promote mainstream blockchain adoption. From 2026, Xiaomi phones available outside mainland China and the United States will come pre-installed with a wallet and crypto discovery app developed by Sei Labs. This would definitely help increase the adoption of the network as Xiaomi is one of the biggest smartphone vendors in the world, just behind Samsung and Apple. Participating phones will be able to conduct peer-to-peer payments, explore Web3 products, and access decentralized applications without the need to download third-party apps. What’s more, Sei plans to implement stablecoin payments in over 20,000 Xiaomi stores, starting in Hong Kong and the European Union. Sei Labs aims to “build a decentralized NASDAQ” and targets to accommodate 200,000 transactions per second as it aims to shift the financial ecosystem on-chain. To make it possible, th...
