10 minutes of AI use weakens focus on hard tasks — research

Spending as little as 10 minutes with an AI tool may chip away at a person’s willingness to grind through tough work, according to a newly published study. A team of researchers carried out several experiments and found that people lost focus and gave up more easily on demanding tasks soon after turning to artificial intelligence for help. The team calls the result a striking one. They say it matches what plenty of people already suspect: leaning on AI slowly wears down our mental sharpness. When answers arrive within seconds, working things out on your own starts to feel painfully slow. That robs people of what the researchers call productive struggle, the kind of effort that actually helps us improve. Scam attempts hit 84% of Filipino adults, losses reach Php121.8 billion Artificial Intelligence designs viruses that kill bacteria more effectively Brian Christian of the University of California, Berkeley, who took part in the work, put it this way. Self-replicating AI could escape and spread on IoT devices — Anthropic

Self-replicating-AI

Small AI models may be able to clone themselves onto internet-of-things devices such as smart ovens and TVs in a matter of months, according to Anthropic.

That prospect sounds troubling to say the least. AI systems today mostly live in data centers, where their owners can shut them down when problems arise. A model scattered across thousands of weakly protected devices in homes and offices would have no such kill switch. Halting it would require locating and scrubbing every infected gadget, a task that becomes nearly impossible if the model launches cyberattacks.

The warning lands after a year in which top AI models and their agents have repeatedly dodged safety guardrails, striking rival corporations and government bodies across the globe.

Anthropic says a self-copying AI might appear in different forms. It could be a cyber tool that breaks into data centers, or one that cons people out of compute credits. The company concedes it cannot know exactly what shape this will take.

Models of 30 billion parameters or fewer already manage many replication steps, but they falter when chaining them together. Should small models keep advancing at their historical rate, Anthropic expects that it will reach that ability by year’s end. However, it’s important to note that these open weight models are competitors to closed models from the likes of Anthropic and OpenAI, so we should take these statements with a grain of salt.

Self-spreading code is hardly a new issue. Worms drove some of the worst cyberattacks on record, among them Stuxnet in 2010, which crippled centrifuges at Iran’s Natanz uranium plant, and WannaCry in 2017, which froze files globally and demanded Bitcoin payments.

Yet unlike worms, AI models can decipher unfamiliar devices by themselves. That allows them to move between computers and from computers to other devices. Anthropic foresees a future “awash with agents running on all types of hardware, including some that aren’t under human control.”

Amazon announces two new Tomb Raider games

Get ready to dust off your climbing axes. Lara Croft, the legendary treasure hunter, is returning to consoles and computers in a big way. Following a long break from solo adventures, two major new games in the Tomb Raider series were revealed at The Game Awards 2025. The last time players controlled Lara in a core series game was 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Now, publisher Amazon Games and longtime developer Crystal Dynamics are bringing her back with a pair of distinct projects. The first is Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis , a full remake of the original 1996 game that started it all. It is being built with Unreal Engine 5 by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog. Fans can expect a visual overhaul for Lara’s first journey, which the announcement suggests will still include prehistoric creatures. This remake is planned for launch in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Following that will be Tomb Raider: Catalyst , an entirely new story set for release in 2027....

Sei Crypto Wallet to come pre-installed on Xiaomi phones

Xiaomi and The Sei Development Foundation, a non-profit that promotes the Sei network, have entered a global partnership that aims to promote mainstream blockchain adoption. From 2026, Xiaomi phones available outside mainland China and the United States will come pre-installed with a wallet and crypto discovery app developed by Sei Labs. This would definitely help increase the adoption of the network as Xiaomi is one of the biggest smartphone vendors in the world, just behind Samsung and Apple. Participating phones will be able to conduct peer-to-peer payments, explore Web3 products, and access decentralized applications without the need to download third-party apps. What’s more, Sei plans to implement stablecoin payments in over 20,000 Xiaomi stores, starting in Hong Kong and the European Union. Sei Labs aims to “build a decentralized NASDAQ” and targets to accommodate 200,000 transactions per second as it aims to shift the financial ecosystem on-chain. To make it possible, th...
