Microsoft discontinues underwater data centers

As of 2024, Microsoft no longer has active data centers underwater. If you recall, the tech giant had its experimental research and development called Project Natick . It was first proposed in 2013 to determine how an underwater farm server could help reduce cooling costs while promoting environmental sustainability. The first prototype was deployed during the initial phase in 2015, followed by a second phase in which hundreds of servers were submerged 117 feet below. By 2020, Microsoft declared that underwater data centers were reliable and practical. But it seems Microsoft is already ready to move on. Noelle Walsh, the corporate vice president at Microsoft’s Cloud Operations + Innovation division, confirmed that there are no plans to build more underwater data centers. She said her team worked on the project, yielded results, and gained knowledge about operating servers below sea level. The company will leverage the knowledge gained from the experiment and apply it elsewhere.

CICC advises Filipinos to use separate email address, phone number on AI platforms

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has issued a warning to the public regarding the potential risks of using artificial intelligence (AI) software. This advisory, released on Friday, highlights concerns about the possible leakage of personal information when signing up for such services.

CICC Deputy Executive Director Mary Rose Magsaysay suggested precautions that the public could follow to prevent issues with AI-related activities. When people use AI, users typically need to register on apps/websites, which involves providing personal identifiable information, Magsaysay explained during a public briefing.

For safety purposes, Magsaysay recommended that if Filipinos are going to engage with AI, they should set up an account that is not linked to their primary emails and personal information. She added that the public should create a specific account just for AI platforms and use a dedicated phone number solely for this use case.

The CICC also strongly advised against using work email addresses for AI services to prevent potential data breaches, as work emails are particularly vulnerable to attacks. Magsaysay noted that while some AI services are free, it probably means that the users are the product. Even paid AI services are not entirely risk-free, as they can also collect user information which can be sold to other companies.

Lastly, the CICC cautioned users about the use of AI image alteration programs on social media, as they often comes with a risk. And by staying vigilant, it lessens the potential damage that technology might cause in everyone’s lives.
