Microsoft discontinues underwater data centers

As of 2024, Microsoft no longer has active data centers underwater. If you recall, the tech giant had its experimental research and development called Project Natick . It was first proposed in 2013 to determine how an underwater farm server could help reduce cooling costs while promoting environmental sustainability. The first prototype was deployed during the initial phase in 2015, followed by a second phase in which hundreds of servers were submerged 117 feet below. By 2020, Microsoft declared that underwater data centers were reliable and practical. But it seems Microsoft is already ready to move on. Noelle Walsh, the corporate vice president at Microsoft’s Cloud Operations + Innovation division, confirmed that there are no plans to build more underwater data centers. She said her team worked on the project, yielded results, and gained knowledge about operating servers below sea level. The company will leverage the knowledge gained from the experiment and apply it elsewhere.

OPPO has unveiled the new Reno12 and Reno12 Pro to the global market.

While they look similar, the OPPO Reno12 and 12 Pro Global models are different from their Chinese counterparts that came out in May. These new models are powered by a special MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Energy chipset, which MediaTek optimized for OPPO to provide better power efficiency.

Both models also share 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED screens with a 120Hz refresh rate and support for up to HDR10+. However, the Pro model gets Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 while the vanilla will be the first to come with Gorilla Glass 7i.

They also have the same 5,000mAh battery with 80W SuperVOOC charging that can charge the device from 1% to 49% in just 18 minutes and a full charge in 46 minutes.

Their key difference is in the camera. With the OPPO Reno12 Pro, you get a 50-megapixel Sony LYT600 sensor with a 26mm equivalent and optical image stabilization. The 50-megapixel 2x zoom lens with a 47mm equivalent is also here, which is good for portraits.

An 8-megapixel ultra-wide glass is also here and a 50-megapixel selfie camera with autofocus. On the other hand, the OPPO Reno12 swaps the portrait camera for a 2-megapixel macro lens, but the rest stays the same.

Of course, the camera app will feature a bunch of AI features. There’s the AI Clear Face that enhances a subject’s facial features; AI Best Face to make sure the subjects’ eyes are open; and an updated AI Eraser. An AI image generator is also here that puts your face in different images.

Other AI features include AI Write, AI Summary, and AI Speak — all utilize Google Gemini.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra: SD 8 Gen 3, 120Hz AMOLED, 1-inch sensor, Titanium Edition

Xiaomi has introduced in China its best smartphone to date, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, just a few days before its global debut at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona this February 25. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra looks similar to its predecessor in terms of the layout. But this time, it’s more refined, and Xiaomi is joining in on the Titanium hype as it will come with a Titanium Special Edition model, which uses a grade 5 titanium like the new iPhone 15 Pro series. Oddly, it weighs 229.6g, which is heavier than the black and white (22.4.4g) and Dragon Crystal (229.5g) colors. The Titanium will also exclusively get two-way satellite communication. Another similar but refined feature is the cameras. It still has four 50-megapixel shooters, however, the main one gets an upgraded 1-inch Sony LYT-900 sensor. It also has a wider f/1.63 aperture, which can be dropped to f/4.0. The other three cameras use the same 1/2.5-inch Sony IMX858 sensor. That’s for the ultra-wide lens with a 12mm eq
