Meralco, Samsung team up for nuclear energy initiative in PH

Meralco-Samsung-Nuclear-Energy-PH

Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has secured a deal with Samsung C&T Corporation to explore nuclear energy projects and support the Philippine government’s long-term objectives on energy security.

Meralco Executive Vice President Ronnie L. Aperocho and Samsung C&T President Jungwook Kim formalized the partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding during The Philippines-Korea Business Forum on October 7. As outlined in the document, the two companies will enter discussions on the technical design, regulatory frameworks, and grid infrastructure that are necessary for implementing nuclear technology.

Aperocho said that this would enhance the knowledge of Meralco on nuclear energy and align the decision making of the company with international best practices. The company’s chairman and CEO, Manuel Pangilinan, described the collaboration with the South Korean conglomerate’s construction and engineering arm as a strategic move for integrating nuclear energy into the power supply mix in the Philippines.

The Philippine government is targeting a 1200-megawatt capacity from operational nuclear power plants by 2032, with plans to expand to 2400 megawatts by 2040. On October 8, the Department of Energy and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power agreed to a no-cost feasibility study for rehabilitating the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.

Xiaomi has introduced in China its best smartphone to date, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, just a few days before its global debut at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona this February 25. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra looks similar to its predecessor in terms of the layout. But this time, it’s more refined, and Xiaomi is joining in on the Titanium hype as it will come with a Titanium Special Edition model, which uses a grade 5 titanium like the new iPhone 15 Pro series. Oddly, it weighs 229.6g, which is heavier than the black and white (22.4.4g) and Dragon Crystal (229.5g) colors. The Titanium will also exclusively get two-way satellite communication. Another similar but refined feature is the cameras. It still has four 50-megapixel shooters, however, the main one gets an upgraded 1-inch Sony LYT-900 sensor. It also has a wider f/1.63 aperture, which can be dropped to f/4.0. The other three cameras use the same 1/2.5-inch Sony IMX858 sensor. That’s for the ultra-wide lens with a 12mm eq
